SARAH COUNCIL - ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is informed by personal experiences, research and observations. I am drawn toward themes of shifting perception, power dynamics, intimacy and identity, creating dances that range from intimate observations of daily life and relationships to wider focused explorations of socio-political concerns.

I have a deep curiosity for movement and the body. I love to play with momentum, dynamic contrast and breath, maintaining a physical and emotional clarity that is detailed and precise. I incorporate the use of somatic practice and improvisation into my creative process; focusing on an inner felt sense and listening to what the body has to say.

My works are grounded in a visceral theatricality and are shaped by extended periods of exploration that give rise to an intimacy and trust between the dancers that is deeply felt by audiences. This trust allows for risk taking and experimentation in the creative process. It allows for a sense of present awareness in performance. I am very interested in drawing audiences into this present moment and meeting them there in meaningful ways that are thought provoking and emotionally transporting.

I believe that the creative process is powerful. It is transformative for individuals and communities. I aim to be a part of contributing to the artistic landscape of my community by connecting with others through performance, but also by inviting people into the creative process itself. With each new project I embark on, I facilitate dance making workshops and open rehearsals for community members of all ages and abilities. These workshops give participants the opportunity to connect to their bodies and to think and share deeply with others as they are led through the creative dance making process. In a time when a focus on division is directing the cultural conversation, seeing people of different backgrounds and experiences come together to speak, listen, move and create inspires me.
